Erik Friedlander's Topaz
Erik Friedlander - cello; Andy Laster - alto saxophone; Satoshi Takeishi - percussion; Stomu Takeishi - bass
March 28
Jazz cellist and composer Erik Friedlander is the rarest of breeds: a classically trained classical cellist with serious jazz background, whose brilliant improvisations and compelling compositions generate exciting new music for the millennium.
He has been associated with an assortment of outstanding musicians including John Zorn, Joe Luviano, Phil Woods, Courtney Love & Hole and classical violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenbeng. "Topaz" (his recently formed quartet and newest CD) explores groove and rhythmic complexity in a funky aggressive style. Sometimes sounding like contemporary avant-garde pieces, occasionally drifting into exotic, vaguely ethnic sounds, the performances rarely fit into the straight-ahead playing of both jazz and classical music. The range of sounds, the improvisational imagination and the subtle sense of composed articulation make for compelling listening.
