Vancouver's 12-member Gamelan Madu Sari installed its 200-piece bronze Javanese court gamelan at Open Space. Master Javanese musician/ composer Sufrisno Hartana accompanied by Madu Sari member-composers offered a five-day workshop in the practice of playing Central Javanese tuned bronze percussion, gongs, drums, stringed instruments and Javanese vocal traditionand the application of gamelan form and practice in contemporary composition. The Gamelan Madu Sari residency culminated in a performance of works from the major new Madu Sari extravaganza Searching for Semar which included extended gamelan compositions by Kenneth Newby, Michael O'Neil, Mark Parlett, Andrew Czink, John Oliver (all Vancouver) and Sufrisno Hartana (Java).
