Open Space welcomed The Ad Hoc Ensemble, a group of improvising musicians with members hailing from four different Canadian cities in four different provinces. Guillaume Bourque - Clarinet, Bass Clarinet (Montreal), Christine Duncan - Voice (Toronto), Jean Martin - Drums (Toronto), Jean Félix Mailloux - Bass (Montreal), Dani Oore - Saxophone and things (Halifax) and Jesse Zubot - Violin (Vancouver) came together to create a brand-new ensemble that toured from one side of the country to the other. This project was born out of a collaboration between The Music Gallery in Toronto and Montreal’s Theatre La Chapelle. The Ad Hoc Project involved musicians and composers from Toronto and Montreal that played together in both cities.

After the success of previous collaborations that fostered dialouge between the Montreal and Toronto ensembles, the Ad Hoc Project was expanded to become a coast-to-coast venture. In 2008, they were joined by presenters from three more cities: Upstreams music in Halifax, Open Space in Victoria and the Western Front in Vancouver. While the previous season’s concert used musicians and composers from the composed or new music scenes, this group was entirely based on musicians with a background in improvised musics. The Ad Hoc / Ensemble, in its current manifestation, played together for the first time in Montreal on April 14. Together they created a repertoire and toured it across the country.
