In 1987, Open Space, the Victoria Regional Transit Commission, BC Transit and 21 Victoria artists joined to create the largest art gallery in the city when they placed painted panels on the sides of city buses in the spaces usually reserved for advertising.

Gallery on Wheels was such as success that BC Transit asked Open Space to coordinate the project once again in 1988, with additional support from the victoria Real Estate Board. Twenty bus panels were prepared for the summer run by local artists including: Ted Polkinghorne, Phyllis Serota, Geoffrey Gerwig, Ian Thomas, Glen HOwarth, Michael Richardson, Yumie Kono, Gwen Curry, Goerge Grove, Grant Leier, Nixie Barton, Michae Ziegler, Loretta HA, Linda Schmid, Lance Olsen, David Owen Lucas, K2, Marlene Davis, Danny Coon and Paul Rode.

In conjunction with the project, Open Space held Art in the Fast Lane, an exhibition of the 1987 and 1988 bus panels from the Gallery on Wheels project which featured the work of the forty-one local artists who were involved.
