Open Space celebratd its interactive online collaboration, Audiospace 2009, with a performance and workshop from Montreal-based composer/performer Chantale Laplante. Laplante who hosted a presentation on her work and a workshop on improvising at Open Space on Friday October 23 at 7pm. Workshop fee is $5.

On Saturday October 24 at 8pm, Laplante was joined by Calgary-based saxaphonist Jeremey Brown to present a performance of improvisation at Open Space.

Audiospace 2009 featured Canadian electroacoustic composer Chantale Laplante, who invited audio artists to create a 4 – 4.5 minute sound piece by working within a collaborative process. The submissions, along with the diaries from the artists, were presented in the Audiospace gallery for public listening and active discussion through October 20, 2009. Comments from visitors to the site played a role in selecting works recognized to receive honoraria and featured at a networked Audiospace presentation and discussion with Chantale Laplante at Open Space in Victoria on Friday, October 23, 2009.

Montreal’s Chantale Laplante’s instrumental and electroacoustic works are inspired from Nathalie Sarraute’s novels and Morton Feldman’s music. Sarraute investigates the area of sensation in a grasping manner and Feldman reconsiders the notion of time and duration in the acoustic context. Laplante’s improvising work is also involved with issues that are reflected in her use of an increasingly reduced sound material.

Calgary-based Jeremy Brown has been at the forefront of contemporary saxophone development and evolution in Canada. As a master soloist and chamber musician he has performed and recorded internationally working with renowned composers, improvisers and ensembles such as Verismo, SAXOFFONEE and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

Audiospace, initiated in 2003 in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Open Space, is a bi-annual web-based audio art project that explores the Internet as a venue for sound works.
