MISSION, MANDATE, VALUES, AND OPERATING PRINCIPLES

1. MISSION

Open Space supports experimental artistic practices in all contemporary arts disciplines, acting as a laboratory for engaging art, artists, and audiences.

2. MANDATE

Open Space programming and operational activities are intended to

explore the role and status of artists and contemporary art of all media;
provide artists with opportunities to develop, present, and disseminate work;
advance new areas of art production and criticism;
engage diverse publics in contemporary visual, sound, literary, media, and performance arts;
pay professional artists’ fees (CARFAC, SOCAN);
operate in an ethically and fiscally responsible manner to further the Society’s objectives.

3. VALUES AND OPERATING PRINCIPLES

Artistic excellence and exploration:

Artists are core to all Open Space programming, operations and planning.
Open Space supports investigative, experimental projects, and practices in all artistic disciplines.
Open Space encourages artistic excellence.

Engagement: Open Space participates in the contemporary arts by

contributing to local, national and international social and cultural initiatives, dialogues and advocacy;
welcoming participation from diverse communities;
offering financially accessible programs;
stimulating critical exchange, dialogue, and debate;
recognizing controversy as part of contemporary art: supporting the principle of freedom of expression.
