Connection Disconnection attempts to catch a glimpse of the intricate web of human connection. It is constructed of Plexiglas boxes placed over black and white photographs. The configuration of the boxes is significant in addressing how people spatially live close to one another, yet have little or no meaningful connection.

Collaboratory: Systems Systems Crush

Charles Gardner, Kennedy Telford, Caitlin Lewis (Victoria)

May 21 - June 8

Collaboratory: Systems Systems Crush is the first part of a series of three Collaboratory Series presentations programmed at Open Space this year that utilize an exploratory research sensibility (i.e. laboratory) and co-operative efforts (i.e. collaboration) in subverting traditional concepts of art. This project series sets out to encourage dialogue and discussions, multi-disciplinary events, spontaneity, and artistic-risk taking among the artistic community. Artistic (aesthetic, formal and technical concerns), theoretical, social and local issues will be the discussion and production points in an attempt to broaden the dialogue around "New Artistic Practices" and challenge the tenets of traditional art forms.

Merzbow: Masami Akita (Japan) - Solo Acoustic Series

Merzbow is considered by many to be the undisputed "King of the Extreme Noise Genre", which is believed to have originated in Japan. Influenced by the surrealist and Dadaist movements, Akita took his "Merzbow" pseudonym from German artist Kurt Schwitter's pre-war architectural assemblage, The Cathedral of Erotic Misery, also known as "Merzbau". He has been releasing noise recordings since 1980. Merzbow will perform work at Open Space that continues to remain unable to be categorized, since it doesn't fit neatly into the "music" category for most people. His unpredictable, at times chaotic sounds usually test the limits of any stereo system.
