Vertrek Ensemble with Luc Houtkamp

Ron de Jong (Edmonton) and Vadim Budman (Edmonton)
in collaboration with Luc Houtkamp (The Netherlands)

Friday, June 28 @ 8pm

Vertrek Ensemble was conceived by percussionist Ron de Jong is 1996. Vertrek is the Dutch word for "Departure". The mandate of Vertrek Ensemble is the making of music through free improvisation. A flexible improvisation ensemble, Vertrek is always in transition with the invitation of guests to employ the best possibility of "ground zero" improvised music making. It is these activities which are the lifeblood of such music making - constant variation with constant changing variables. Vertrek Ensemble's "core" is made up of Ron de Jong playing drums, cymbals and various percussion and Vadim Budman playing various stringed and brass instruments. They will be joined by Dutch composer and saxophonist Luc Houtkamp.

Sensual Microscapes

Kathy Kovosi (Victoria)

June 14 - July 6

Vertical Gallery

Sensual Microscapes is created through a process of layering acrylic paint and wax numerous times to build up the surface of the painting, giving it a visceral organic sensuality. The paint and wax collaborate to create the sensation of internal microscopic landscapes. The question "What is beautiful?" is addressed.
