G8 Pizza and the Study for the Falling Man
November 28 to December 20, 2003
G8 Pizza and the Study for the Falling Man
Semsar Siahaan (Victoria/Indonesia)
Opening Friday, November 28, 8pm
This work by the Indonesian expatriate is yet another study in politics and man in the western hemisphere. Siahaan has been analyzing the ‘man on the street’ since arriving in Victoria after leaving his home country for political reasons. His refugee stay in Victoria has produced some of his finest drawings and this drawing installation is no different. drawn on cardboard found in the alleys of Victoria these works portray ‘Everyman’ in some of our most unappealing moments. For instance: as we carry the dog shit wrapped in plastic for Fido warry of anyone else who will catch us; attempting to demonstrate, yet again, in oder for our governments to listen, once?; as part of the strata that builds continuously with each person standing on their neighbours shoulders as your neighbours stand on your shoulders. Each work is simply drawn in conte with minimal colouring on recycled cardboard which has its own political implications.
This exhibition will be the last we see of Siahaan for a while as he feels the pull of his home and has decided to travel back to Indonesia for a while.

THE CLOTHES PROJECT

THE CLOTHES PROJECT
Megan Wilson & Rob Ochiena (Vancouver)
Opening: Friday, November 14, 8pm
For this project, clothing is used to examine the nature of intervention.
By picking up discarded clothing from the street, laundering it and
returning it to its original location, the ways in which artists interact
with their environments is explored. The project hopes to look at social
intervention practices such as rehabilitation and regentrification and how
these manifest themselves in the experience of urban life.
