OUTERSPACE

Friday, June 4, 2004

6 pm: Open Space is pleased to introduce the Telecom History Project, OUTERSPACE seen on the Open Space website (www.openspace.ca/outerspace/index.html). Open Space has been an innovator in contemporary art since 1972. Under the Directorship of Bill Bartlett from 1974-1978, Open Space experimented with Slow-Scan video and other pioneering New Media Ventures. This historical period is a very important one not only for Open Space as it entered the International Art Scene but also for the development of New Media in general with regards to creativity and education. This research project was supported by The British Columbia Museums Association through a Digital Collections grant.

6 pm: Dream Factory, Milutin Gubash and Althea Thauberger. Sixteen amateur and professional artists were chosen, after auditions, to perform material from their existing repertoires. These performances were staged and videotaped at Open Space on the evening of August 1, 2002, in a makeshift television studio, installed within the gallery.

8 pm: Open Space New Music is proud to present a night of museful musical entertainment with performances from Erik Friedlander and the Tony Wilson 5tet. New wave jazz and improvisational cellist Erik Friedlander will wow the audience with original and complex improvised music, supported by a framework of rehersed pieces from his first solo CD entitled Maldoror, and other scores from such composers as banned Iranian pop star Googoosh, John Zorn, and Carlos Santana; while the Tony Wilson 5tet will soothe the crowd with thier melancholic melodies.
