Victoria ---- Amidst the sunny heat and throngs of tourist’s feet exploring Victoria’s downtown zone this summer, three performance projects wil explore gaps in the normal entertainment fare for buffet dazed nomadic audiences. Open Space performance is pleased to host an evening of performance art by three artists exploring different ways to interact and interject public spaces with protest actions, group narcissism, and depths of expression often found behind closed doors.

May 29 - 31 The Ministry of Casual Living. Daily
June 1, 2 Open Space. Daily. Artist Talk Saturday, June 2, 12pm.
How long has it been since your last tune up? Does your bicycle work the way you want it to? Do you care about the impact that your life and lifestyle make on the environment? If you want a better world and a better ride, you will probably enjoy taking part. The Bicycle Rehabilitation Project depends heavily on audience participation, and each individual participant strengthens the message that the project creates. Its creator Michael Flaherty will be on site both at the Ministry of Casual Living and Open Space to provide participants with a bicycle tune up.
The Exchange Project

Artists Talk 8pm

This project exchanges the studio for the roads, truck stops, border crossings and cities of North America. Through the untidy weaving of politics, surveillance technology and identity construction this performance engages critique. Over time and with the combined effort of exchange participants, resistance, solidarity, and artistic critique emerge.
Politics: Exchange engages in cross border, person-to person, trade negotiations. It offers artistic resistance to international economic agreements such as the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Surveillance: Exchange critiques and exposes Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. Fears of terrorism, national security, and identity authentication have bolstered the demand for RFID.
Identity: Exchange questions and disrupts correlations between corporate consumer data and personal identity through the dispersal and exchange of personal belongings (corporate data elements).

Artists' Talk July 27 @ noon
Composers Marci Rabe and Kristy Farkas confront the creative act of composition in an performance that embraces the lasting impression of memories. The merging of individually composed musical gestures melds with an evocative visual performance that converges the audience with the performance space. Invoked by intricate subtleties, the voice, double bass and percussion instruments create a delicate yet sometimes crass spectrum of sound. The naked body is explored as sculpture and canvas to express intimate experiences and connections with others. Colour, music, movement and touch form born naked - art in progress.
