Open Space Celebrates 30th Anniversary

On October 19, 2002, Open Space celebrated its 30th Anniversary as Victoria’s oldest Artist Run Centre, which was incorporated on that same auspicious date in 1972. The past 30 years of cultural growth not only mirrors the multi-disciplinary programming at Open Space, but represents the support of artists in their attempts to bring new ideas to the ever-changing face of contemporary art. In the least, it speaks of this institution’s involvement with the community-at-large as Victoria continues to grow in stature as a creative locale.

Open Space is proud of its history and the individuals–artists, staff, volunteers, members and board of directors–who have brought their ideas and concepts to the roundtable of art for discussion and analysis. When our door at 510 Fort Street opens, it is done so out of love and dedication to each act of human creation concerned with imaginative designs and the artistic expression of ideas. These ideas and concepts have emerged from the collective thoughts of humanity and represent the history of art, philosophy, socio-political reasoning and technological development. Open Space provides a public forum that encourages discussion, analysis and the subsequent inception of new ideas.

One reason for the continual multiplicity of programming at Open Space has been the ebb and flow of human talent at its doors. From its inception and throughout its history, Open Space has attracted some of the best artists, musicians, performers and writers from across Canada and around the world. This constant stream of productions provides opportunities for those interested in the arts to work, volunteer, liaison with, help administer and co-ordinate in any number of ways to bring an idea to fruition. Constantly challenged by emerging and established artists, the institution and its staff and volunteers guide Open Space towards current ideas, new directions and innovative methods in presentation, production and dissemination.

Open Space considers its 30th anniversary year to be a celebration and an opportunity to increase awareness of its history, programming, resources and future direction. Our 2002–2003 schedule includes our ongoing programming as well as special anniversary activities (tba). This schedule and all of the local, national and international contemporary art communities that it includes is very much a part of this celebration.
