Open Space introduces a New Music Workshop Series facilitated by an array of local and visiting composers, musicians and sound artists, each offering their unique perspective on the creation of real-time music.
Workshop: Mechanics of Sound Play
Presenter: Gordon Monahan

Sound artist Gordon Monahan (Toronto, Berlin) will talk about and demonstrate his approach to creating improvised works that illuminate basic and surprising elements of sound in this first edition of the Open Space Music Improvisation Workshop Series. Monahan will be playing Theremin for this event.
Workshop: Vocal Improvisation
Presenters: Cathy Lewis and Tina Pearson

Cathy Lewis and Tina Pearson offer musicians and vocalists a series that explores and extends vocal expressions and interactions with tools from basic breath and bodywork to sonic mediation and new music improvisation practices. Part 2 November 19.
Workshop: Styles of Music Improvisation

Critically acclaimed guitarist Tony Wilson will discuss and demonstrate a range of approaches to improvisation informed by jazz, blues and free improvisation styles.
Workshop: Music Improvisation – gadgets and non-traditional instruments

Visiting sound artist Gayle Young joins Jeff Morton and Tina Pearson in a session that focuses on alternate objects, tools and ‘instruments’, and discusses the authority of musical gesture. Gayle Young’s Amaranth and Columbine, tuned tubing, circuit boards, circuit bent electronics, circuit boards, no-input mixer, contact mics, toys, bells and other gadgets will be available to explore – and bring your own stuff.
Workshop: Instrument Building, Design and Practice

Visiting sound artist Gayle young will demonstrate the physical requirements for building acoustic instruments, and how to develop unique playing techniques by focusing on enhancing vibration, and offer practical experience designing, creating and listening through tuned tubing.
Workshop: Music Improvisation - a European Perspective
Presenters: Achim Kaufmann, Frank Gratkowski, (Holland) and Wilbert de Joode (Germany)

This trio (piano, clarinets, saxophone, string bass) are seasoned improvising chamber musicians working extensively in the European milieu. The trio is equally adept when focusing on discursive strategies or emphasizing timbrel (Arabic percussion) explorations, both of which will be discussed during the workshop.
The Trio Kaufmann/Gratkowski/de Joode will perform a concert at 8 pm at Wood Hall the same evening.

This trio of local sound artists offers an exploration of improvisation practices and techniques from their wide-ranging work in new music. Sessions will include investigations of graphic scores, sonic meditation, an exploration and extension of vocal expression, electro-acoustic explorations and philosophies of improvisation practice and performance. The workshops will also merge ideas and elements from the upcoming Open Space visual arts installation Quantal Strife, curated by Sally McKay.
