Workshop: Styles of Music Improvisation
Monday, October 22 7 pm
Drop in Fee
Victoria - Critically acclaimed avant garde composer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Tony Wilson works in the jazz and improvisation realms. On October 22, he will present new works from his recently released solo CD Horse’s Dream at Open Space. This Hornby Island based guitarist has inspired audiences for many years with his cutting edge guitar stylings that fall somewhere in between the ambient sounds of Bill Frisell and the more angular atonal playing of Sonny Sharrock.
Tony Wilson will be collaborating with the Vancouver duo Carsick, comprised of JP Carter (trumpet) and Dave Sikula (guitar), also members of the post-rock jazz quartet The Inhabitants. Carter and Sikula play music that ranges through beautiful jazz-tinged melodies, improvisational sonic bursts and epic noise-inspired soundscapes.
Tony Wilson also offers Styles of Music Improvisation, a hands on workshop for musicians, on Monday, October 22 7 pm at Open Space. Wilson will discuss and demonstrate a range of approaches to improvisation informed by jazz, blues and free improvisation styles. Participants are encouraged to bring their instruments. A $5 drop in fee applies.
