Curator John G. Boehme (gourmand, surfer, artist and impresario) is obsessed by the ways in which food, as art, has pollinated the contemporary artistic psyche. Boehme’s performance event, Stay and Chat, is two evenings of food and storytelling. Operating much like a mischievous social scientist, Boehme’s menu samples the inventiveness of food, the rich discourse surrounding food, and the social constructs of meals.
Food, and the stories we tell during its consumption, begins in childhood to inform our relationship with our culture, identity and heritage. Storytelling is tightly woven in the fabric of the self and the language of culture. What better way to explore this than pairing storytellers and artists who use food as the basis for their work?
Four artists will animate the dinner tables of Stay and Chat as a lively forum for pleasure, discourse, debate, and transformation. Jacques van Poppel (Amsterdam) is critically acclaimed performance artist and a member of the Black Market International who creates his actions from the locales he visits. Warren Arcan (Vancouver) is an esteemed storyteller. Mike Murphy (Toronto) is a visual artist who has planned a five-course meal, with each course featuring quail. Mary Patterson (Victoria) is a European trained chef who is also a visual artist.
Meet John G. Boehme, the two storytellers, and two chefs at Open Space on Friday, March 17 and Saturday, March 18. Cocktails at 7:00 pm, followed by a dining performance experience at 8:00 pm. $ 5.00 general admission; $8.00 family admission
