Opening April 3, 8pm

Quebec artist Martine Dolbec will be in residence at Open Space from March 25 to April 2 creating micro-territories composed of conical mounds of sand, red wool, wire, balsa wood as well as other natural and human-made materials. Dolbec’s intensive process responds to the interior architecture of Open Space.

Created by a playful process, Dolbec’s installations are subtle: “The disposition of elements within the gallery creates a syntactical game that I refer to as ‘narrative territory’. It is a form of terrestrial writing given that the ground is an essential feature of these territories. This form of terrestrial writing is worked out in the same spirit as constructions made by children creating sand-pies, tiny houses, etc. in the sand. The micro-territories on the floor introduce a form of intrigue, parallel to that of fables and tall tales. Moreover, the action of the spectator observing these assembleges bears a resemblance to that of observing insects on the ground or other microscopic universes.”

Dolbec’s work extends the complexities of how we navigate and perceive space. Her installations, intensely hued, simple and fragile, animate the dynamic relationships of interior space. Dolbec’s micro-territories transforms the rigidity of drywall, plank and timber into a mutable space of quiet surprises.

Please join Martine Dolbec to open Terres rouges: Red Earths on Friday evening, April 3 at 7:30pm. Dolbec will present a brief artist talk. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. Terres rouges: Red Earths continues to May 2.

l’installation Terres rouges à l’Open Space.
